Scents & Candle Care

Last updated: November 12, 2025

A guide to our six house scents, how to get the best from each kind of product, and the safety rules that matter with anything that burns, heats or sprays.

The six house scents

Candles

The first burn

Let the wax melt all the way to the edge the first time, usually two to three hours. This sets an even melt pool for every burn after it and stops the candle tunnelling down the middle.

Safety rules for every candle

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended, and never fall asleep with one lit.
  • Keep candles in sight and away from drafts, curtains, shelves above, children, pets and anything that can catch fire.
  • Trim the wick to about 1/4 in (6 mm) before every burn.
  • Burn for no more than 4 hours at a time, then let the candle cool before relighting.
  • Always stand candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface. The vessel gets hot.
  • Stop burning when about 1/2 in (12 mm) of wax is left at the bottom.
  • Do not move a candle while it is lit or while the wax is still liquid.

Looking after the flame

A flame that flickers, smokes or grows tall usually means the wick is too long or the candle is in a draft. Put it out, let it cool, trim the wick and move it somewhere still. A snuffer or wick dipper puts the flame out with less smoke and no splashing.

Reusing the vessel

When about 1/2 in of wax is left, stop burning. Put the cool vessel in the freezer for an hour, ease out the remaining wax, then wash it in warm soapy water.

Reed diffusers

  • Remove the stopper, place the reeds in the bottle and wait a few hours for the scent to build.
  • Flip the reeds every week or so for a stronger scent. Wipe the ends as you do, as oil drips can mark surfaces.
  • Stand the bottle on a tray or coaster, away from heat, flames and direct sun.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets. Diffuser oil is harmful if swallowed: do not induce vomiting, seek medical advice and show the label.
  • Replace the reeds when the scent fades, or when you change to a different fragrance.

Room and linen sprays

  • Spray into the air, or over fabrics from about 12 in / 30 cm. Test a hidden area of delicate fabric first.
  • The sprays contain alcohol and are flammable. Never spray near a lit candle, a fire or a hot surface.
  • Do not spray on skin, on pets or onto polished wood.

Wax melts and the warmer

  • Use one melt at a time, and only in a warmer designed for wax melts.
  • Do not leave a switched-on warmer unattended. Ours switches itself off after eight hours as a backstop, not a substitute.
  • The dish gets hot. Let the wax cool and harden before you lift it out or move the warmer.
  • Place it on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from curtains, children and pets.

Fragrance allergens

Our fragrances contain naturally occurring and synthetic aroma materials. Each product page names the allergens it contains, for example linalool, coumarin, limonene, citral, hexyl cinnamal, citronellol, geraniol or oakmoss extract, along with the warning "May produce an allergic reaction." Air the room regularly while burning or diffusing, and stop using a product if you notice irritation.

A plain promise: our products are made to scent your home. We do not claim they purify the air or have any health, mood or sleep benefit.
